Design of transmission-type coding metasurface and its application of beam forming

Transmission-type coding metasurface capable of shaping the transmitted field patterns is introduced in this letter. The metamaterial bits are the basic elements of coding metasurface and are designed as cascaded structures composed of patterned metallic sheets and dielectric substrates. Metasurfaces function as shaping the transmitted field patterns are constructed by assembling those metamaterial bits with different sequences. Experimental studies are carried out at the microwave regime showing required split beam patterns shaped by a fabricated coding metasurface. The measured field characteristics are well agreed with the simulated results. Our work adds another method to design the coding metasurface and exhibits its potential of engineering transmitted electromagnetic field.
